My Refuge Still (Song of Lament)

As a body, we rejoice with those who rejoice and mourn with those who mourn. The Book of Psalms reflects this well by providing songs of corporate celebration as well as songs of individual and corporate lament. It is striking how many psalms are given to lament. They give us a model of what this looks like.

This song is taken from Psalm 88, a psalm that does not resolve in hope. Rather, it honestly questions if God hears the cries of the righteous. Believers today have assurance that God hears our cries because we are in Christ. Yet we need to have space to individually and corporately lament the brokenness of this fallen world and the brokenness in our own lives. One day Christ will return and the afflictions we now experience will disappear when we see Jesus face to face. Until then, we can bring our honest prayers to God...together.
