Breakout Music & Guide
This will come towards the end of the conference after we have heard the theology.
The breakouts have the potential to be the most concrete application of that theology to our artistry.
Be ready to bring your questions and involvement to deepen the practicality.
What can you expect?
1
A SHORTER TEACHING
It further develops the ideas you have already heard.
2
HANDS ON PLAYING
The bulk of the musician breakout time (not the sound tech or leader breakout) will be spent working through the two songs below—
a newer song and an older song. For the sake of simplicity, we are only including chord charts.
We will need 2-3 volunteers per song to play or sing through the song.
So at least a few of you will need to come ready to do just that. Be bold! It’ll be fun :)
(You are welcome to bring your instrument, but you may not get to play it depending on how quickly other people volunteer.)

PRACTICING GIVING & RECEIVING FEEDBACK
Intentionally connecting our theology to our artistry requires discussion and feedback.
You will be able to apply many of the questions you will hear through the conference in this class.
There is one gospel
Modern songs often have more instruments and production than what is done in most churches. So then…
…a few questions to think about:
How can you adapt this to your church? Or your instrument?
If you cut an instrumental, what would you put in its place?
How does its place in the liturgy affect how you would play the intro? Or where you could come in?
Crown Him With Many Crowns
Older hymns weren’t written with bands in mind, so their chord structures are more closed. So then….
…a few questions to think about:
How do you think through opening a chord structure of a hymn up? What rhythms do you choose in your groove to support the melody? What rhythms will you choose for the chord chart below? It’s open for your interpretation! (That’s why there isn’t a recording!
Hymns don’t have turnarounds. So what do you do? How can you both push and cue the congregation to sing? If you have a better idea for a turnaround…bring it to the breakout!
