Pastor's Welcome

Welcome to the website of Hinson Baptist Church, and on behalf of the entire congregation, thanks for visiting. We hope that the information you find here helps you know who we are and what we’re about.

The best way to get to know us, of course, is to visit us as we gather on Sundays to publicly worship God. We aren’t defined by our politics, our ethnicity, our music, or our demographics. You’ll find all sorts here. Instead, we’re defined by our common belief that Jesus of Nazareth is both our Lord and Savior, and we need nothing else in common in order to serve together, love one another, and love our neighbors.

Our purpose as a church is to bring glory to God. We do that as we sing and pray together, serve and love one another, and hear and apply God’s Word in our lives. As we live out God’s Word, He sends us into our neighborhood, our city, and the entire world to declare the good news of the gospel and the “excellencies of Him who called us out of darkness into his marvelous light.”(1 Peter 2:9) It’s in newness of life, not tradition or religious duty, that we obey God’s commission for the church.

As an evangelical community of baptized believers, it’s our desire to display to a watching world the wisdom and glory of God in the gospel through the local church. We think we do that best as we commit ourselves to one another in an intentional community. From public worship to small group Bible studies, from local outreach to world missions, we don’t want to be “lone-ranger” Christians or religious consumers. Rather, we strive to be a community of disciples, spurring one another on to love and good deeds through the grace of the gospel. But it’s not that we want the world to think much of us. We want the world to think much of God because of what they see Him doing among us.

We would love for you to join us in this incredible privilege of making God and his glory visible in Portland. But whether it’s here or some other local church, our prayer is that you will find your life bound together with others through the gospel of Jesus Christ.

For his glory,

Michael Lawrence
