Geoff Chang

Geoff and Stephanie Chang began their ministry at Hinson in September, 2010. Although he was raised in a Christian home, it was at a youth camp that Geoff finally understood the Gospel and repented and trusted in Christ. Geoff earned his BBA from The University of Texas at Austin and his M.Div. from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Geoff serves as Executive Pastor, but is also engaged in member care, discipleship, and preaching. He and Stephanie are spending their time together learning how to be godly parents to their kids.

Mike DeBoer

Mike DeBoer was born and raised in Oregon. Mike came to faith at a young age, but didn't really start to grow until high school. He and his wife Mary-Alice were married in 1979. Mike attended seminary in Denver, CO and earned a M.A. in counseling in 1987. Soon after returning to Portland the DeBoers started attending Hinson in 1988. Mike invests in young people as a school counselor in the Centennial school district. Mike likes to lead small groups, talk deeply with people about their lives, all things outdoors (especially sailing), sports and DIY projects. Mike and Mary-Alice have two young adult children, who are members of Hinson.

Jim Evernden

Jim is a fourth generation Oregonian, growing up in southern Oregon. He studied at the University of LaVerne, Southern Oregon University, and Multnomah University. It was during his undergraduate years that he put his faith in Christ, which eventually caused a shift in his long term career trajectory. He and his wife Terry have been married since 1967. Jim, Terry and their two children spent fourteen years in the Democratic Republic of Congo, then came on staff at Hinson in 1996 Jim has enjoyed climbing mountains in the Congo, windsurfing on the Indian Ocean, and reading massive biographies.

Bill Franzke

Bill Franzke and his wife, Kris, have 2 grown sons and 3 grandchildren and are members of the Sojourners Class. Bill has been a Christian for over 43 years and a member of Hinson Church since 1980. He is a retired school teacher and coach, but continues to coach Spring Track at Centennial High School. Bill is always quick to volunteer to help with paint jobs or other dirty work around our church buildings. If you want to spend time with Bill, it will probably be on a bike ride, on the golf course or at the beach.

Trent Hughes

Trent and Christianne Hughes have four children and have been members at Hinson since 2007. Trent professed faith in Christ at a young age, but came to a better understanding of the gospel in college where he repented and was baptized. Trent earned a Bachelor of Science from the University of Oregon and is a financial analyst. He currently works with the Elders in administering the Benevolence Fund. Trent and Christianne love spending time with their children and are continuing to learn how to be Christ-like parents.

Michael Lawrence

Michael & Adrienne Lawrence have five children and began their ministry at Hinson in September, 2010. Michael came to faith at an early age, but didn't begin to grow as a Christian until his freshman year at Duke University through the ministry of InterVarsity Christian Fellowship. That's where Michael met Adrienne, and after their marriage in 1990, and a few years working for IVCF, they both earned their M.Div. degrees at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. Michael also earned his PhD from Cambridge University in 2003. He came to us from Capitol Hill Baptist Church in Washington, DC, after serving as Associate Pastor for over 8 years. Michael loves books more than food and enjoys an eclectic mix of music. He and his family love skiing in the winter and camping in the summer.

Todd Miles

Todd Miles has been a follower of Jesus from a young age. A native of Oregon, he is married to Camille. They have six children. He has served in the past as an Elder at Hinson. Todd is an Associate Professor of Theology at Western Seminary where he teaches Theology, Hermeneutics and Ethics. Prior to working at Western Seminary, he was employed for ten years as a research engineer at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. Todd is an alumnus of Oregon State University, Western Seminary and The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Todd enjoys "all things athletic", "all things Oregon State" and reading military history and biographies.

Jon Paivarinta

Jon and Elee Paivarinta have 4 children (ages 9-14), and have been married since 1995. They became members at Hinson in 1998. Jon grew up in a Christian home and attended a Christian school, but it was only after high school when he finally submitted to Christ as his King. He received a BA in Music from Portland State, and an MA in Biblical and Theological Studies from Western Seminary. Jon currently shares the teaching responsibility for the Philathian class. Jon works for UPS, while Elee home schools three of their children and cares for the occasional foster child.

Rob Phillippi

Rob has been attending Hinson since 2003. He has served as an Elder at Hinson from 2009 to 2015 and then began again in 2016 after taking a sabbatical year off. Rob accepted Christ as his savior when he was 12 years old. He and his wife have been married since 1989. Rob works in Law Enforcement.

Daniel Schreiner

Daniel & Ashley Schreiner moved to Portland in June, 2011 from Kentucky, when Daniel joined the Hinson Staff as Associate Pastor for Students & Families. They have three kids. Daniel accepted Christ as his Savior as a young child and considers himself very blessed to have been discipled by many godly people - not least of which are his parents. At Western Kentucky University he became a leader in Campus Crusade and later served as a pastoral assistant over youth, college and missions ministries at Capitol Hill Baptist Church in Washington DC.

Tim Shanahan

Tim & Monica Shanahan have been married 30 years, have 3 grown sons and 4 grandchildren. Tim accepted Christ as his Savior 35 years ago and joined Hinson Baptist Church in 1981. He is a mechanical engineer and is President of InSpec Design. In addition to serving our church as elder, Tim has been a member of the Finance Team and coordinated Nogales ministry trips.

Jim Sweeney

Jim and his wife Katharine became a part of the Hinson family in 1986. He lost Katharine to cancer in 2010, after 53 years of marriage. Throughout his years at Hinson Jim has served as a teaching elder, currently as one of the teachers in the Sojourners Class. Jim served as Academic Vice President and Provost of Western Seminary for a number of years. He just completed a five year stint as volunteer president of North Portland College, and waits to see what is next. He doesn’t really consider himself retired, just finding new opportunities. His family of three children, seven grandchildren and two great grandsons all live in the Portland area.

Mark Whitcomb

Mark was born and raised in a pastor's home in South Carolina. He and his wife Jen were married in 2007 and have lived in Oregon since 2013. They have 3 children. Mark has his Masters of Divinity and moved to Portland to study at Hinson in the Pastoral Residency program. He is currently serving on staff at Hinson as a Pastoral Assistant. Previously Mark has worked in property management and also in marketing in the automotive industry. He is always ready to talk about his family, his studies, international soccer, and all things pertaining to cars and motorcycles.

John Willsea

John & Holly Willsea have been married for over 25 years and have six children. John professed faith in Christ at an early age and was baptized when he was 12. After serving with Gospel Missionary Union in Northern England, both John and Holly attended and graduated from Western Seminary. Their family has been worshiping at Hinson since 2005. They have enjoyed serving together as greeters, and John is currently helping co-teach the Philathian class. John is employed in technology, previously as Director of IT at Western Seminary, and currently as a Server Engineer for Providence Health Plans. John and Holly enjoy sharing tea adventures, visiting Cannon Beach, and drinking Sleepy Monk coffee.
