Deacons exist to promote the unity of the church through practical service in our body. Whether it’s organizing ushers, or managing building security, or coordinating volunteers for a reception, our deacons seek to minimize any reason for conflict by devoting their attention to a particular area of ministry. In their various areas of service, they also free the Elders from many practical concerns, allowing them to devote themselves to the spiritual oversight of the church. Deacons are appointed by the congregation for a period of service based on their character and ability to serve (1 Timothy 3). Depending on the nature of the ministry, a deacon may organize a team of volunteers from the congregation to participate with them in their service. Deacons who serve faithfully are a great blessing to the church and gain great assurance in their faith in Jesus Christ.
